Curriculum Statement

Intent

We want Children to thoroughly enjoy their time with us at Bishops Cleeve Preschool, we provide a safe, caring environment where children can learn and grow in all areas of development.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the basis for our curriculum, we provide an environment where children develop skills in the ‘Prime Areas’ of learning ; Communication &Language, Personal, Social & Emotional Development and Physical Development.  Our environment also supports learning in the ‘Specific Areas’; Literacy, Maths, Understanding the World & Expressive Arts & Design.

Implementation

Our children develop skills and knowledge in both our indoor and outdoor areas and we very much enjoy outdoor play and learning on a daily basis.  We have easy access to a small play park, a bmx track (the hills), a skate park and a huge field ready for us to explore.  Our fenced outdoor area has lots of equipment to stimulate and challenge our children.

We have a fantastic range of books which reflect current topics and interests.  We use elements of ‘In the moment planning’ to follow the interests of the children and as such we don’t have strictly planned topics our Long Term plan helps our practitioners guide the children.  We offer lots of fantastic learning provocations and wow moments such as having caterpillars which develop into butterflies which we then release. We use our skills as practitioners to scaffold each child’s learning and feedback to them through conversations, we are able to share their happiness and enjoyment. As practitioner we have a flexible repertoire of approaches and are sensitive to the needs of the children and if adult interaction is necessary.  We have a daily ‘good morning routine’ which we have done in different languages to reflect our EAL children and promote inclusivity.

Phase 1 phonics is embedded in our practice and we recognise that some of our children are ready for phase 2 phonics.  We cater for their needs by inviting Robot Reg to Preschool once a week for lots of fun, each week there are games and activities that teach sound recognition, alliteration and oral blending and segmenting (the necessary foundations for reading and writing).  The classes also help to improve gross motor skill and fine motor skills which support children’s handwriting.

Maths, Understanding the World and Expressive Art & Design learning occurs in all areas of our Preschool and our practitioner’s use their skills to enhance children’s knowledge and scaffold their learning.

Impact

We are focused to make our curriculum relevant and meaningful for every child in our setting.  Through timely assessment we are confident that children gain the knowledge and skills required for the next stage of their education.  We want our children to love learning  and flourish at school.
